My Journey Growing with Acturis
Yujie
When I joined Acturis back in October 2022, I was a brand‑new graduate eager to start my career. What drew me to Acturis was how new‑grad friendly it felt. This was exactly what I needed as I didn’t have much working experience.
As I enter my fourth year at the company, it’s incredible to see how much has changed and how much I’ve grown.
Starting Out and Finding My Path
I began my journey in the Insurance Products team, and like many new grads, I spent those first months absorbing everything I could. My first major project was building Wawanesa Auto, followed by work on Anissa and Arca. Back then, our team structure was less defined. Everyone participated in a bit of everything, which gave me exposure to different product areas.
Our structure evolved as the Canadian team grew. Units became more specialized, responsibilities became clearer, and I found myself transitioning into the Commercial Lines unit where I dealt with commercial packages and cyber products. That shift felt challenging at first, but it turned out to be one of the most rewarding parts of my career so far.
Learning to Mentor and Lead
One of the biggest transformations in my role has been stepping into mentorship. I’ve had the chance to mentor teammates. At first I saw mentorship simply as “being helpful” and a point of contact. I quickly learned it’s much more than that.
Being a good mentor means understanding someone’s strengths, recognizing where they can grow, and helping create opportunities for them to develop. This learning didn’t just help me help others—it helped me grow, too. I’ve developed stronger soft skills, better communication habits, and deeper awareness of what makes a team successful.
Why I Love Working at Acturis
The people are what I value most. Even now, working remotely from Quebec, I still feel deeply connected to my team. Before moving, I loved being in the office and engaging in team socials, day‑to‑day chats. The head office in Victoria really has a friendly and supportive atmosphere. I miss that sometimes, but my current team of four has built a close‑knit dynamic that I really appreciate.
Another thing I’m genuinely grateful for is how supportive the company has been. When I requested to transition to Quebec, Acturis went above and beyond to make sure everything was in place. That level of care meant a lot to me.
Advice for Anyone Looking to Grow Here
If you’re a new grad—or even just early in your career—my advice is simple: go for it.
Acturis is growing quickly, and with growth comes opportunity. Be proactive, be curious, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. This is an environment where you can learn fast, expand your skills, and discover new areas you might not even know you’d enjoy.
A Memorable Part of My Journey
The team restructuring phase stands out as one of the biggest turning points for me. It wasn’t always easy but witnessing the company evolve and becoming part of that transformation is exciting. The process helped clarify roles, improve workflows, and ultimately push me toward the commercial work I now enjoy so much.
