My journey at Acturis

Warren

When I joined Acturis nearly three years ago, I had no idea how quickly my career would change. I came in as a Desktop Support Analyst with a lot of self‑taught, somewhat ad‑hoc technical skills, and today I lead a sub‑unit within our Cloud Engineering team. The journey between those two points has been fast, challenging, and genuinely rewarding.

My introduction to Acturis came through a friend who knew one of the senior developers at one of the business’ Acturis first acquired. I had just gone through an acquisition at my previous company, so hearing that someone had remained at Acturis after a similar transition stood out to me. That kind of loyalty is usually a strong indicator of stability and culture.

My Career Progression

When I first joined, my days were focused on supporting what I’d describe as a more traditional infrastructure. Through my time here, we’ve been moving to a more modern and flexible platform that has been built with the best practices and scalability in mind.

Acturis is very intentional about developing new joiners. My team in particular places an enormous emphasis on mentoring. I came in with largely self-taught skills but I was given ample opportunity to improve my craft and learn from the best. Very quickly, I was surrounded by people who were experts in their fields and incredibly generous with their knowledge. I was encouraged not only to ask questions, but to really dig into the systems, understand them, and start forming opinions about how they could evolve.

Within a year, that learning turned into opportunity. I was sent to London to work in our UK data centres alongside some of our most experienced engineers. Six months later, I found myself setting up the hardware and software infrastructure for new data centres in Canada. Going from ad-hoc self-taught skills to being trained and using new skills has been huge for my career.

Evolving Into Cloud Engineering

As the company began shifting toward a more modern, flexible infrastructure, my role shifted with it. What started as a support‑heavy position gradually transformed into actively engineering modern pipelines. Over time, I stepped into leading a sub‑unit within the Cloud team. Now I get to take ownership of areas I understand deeply, mentor new joiners and continue to take initiative when improvements are needed.

What I Value Most About Working Here

The thing I appreciate most about Acturis is how collaborative it is. I know I can reach out to anyone, on any team, in any time zone, and I’ll get help. People listen with an open mind.

I also love that good ideas are taken seriously. If something would improve the company and you can articulate why, people support you. Many of the latest innovations on our team came from individuals that brought forward ideas they genuinely cared about. The company empowers you to own the things you’re passionate about, and that’s rare.

My Advice for Anyone Wanting to Grow at Acturis

If someone were to ask me how to grow here—whether they’re already with the company or thinking about joining—I would say this:

  1. Make yourself known and available, not just within your own team but across the organization. The people I see experiencing the most growth are the ones who build connections and make themselves reliable across multiple teams. Acturis is collaborative by nature and being open to connect matters.
  2. Take initiative. If you want to learn something new, improve a process, or contribute positively to the culture—do it. The company rewards people who show drive, curiosity, and a willingness to make things better.

Acturis Canada is still relatively new and growing quickly. New opportunities appear constantly, and we’re always looking for people who are eager to step into them. If you think you’ve got the skills, the drive, or even just the potential—there’s a good chance we want you. This is a great time to join.
