From College to Career: My Journey at Acturis

How I Found Acturis

I’ve been with Acturis for about two and a half years now. I joined in mid-May 2023 as a software developer. This was my first professional job after college, so everything felt new and exciting.

There were two phases to how I discovered Acturis. The first time was during a tech event at UBC when I was still in college. I didn’t know much about the company then—I was just exploring and talking to different organizations. Later, when I started applying for jobs, my roommate, who had done a co-op at Acturis, recommended the company. He even shared an employee’s email with me. I sent a cold email, and to my surprise, he replied with a detailed response about the company, the open role, and the hiring process. That level of clarity and responsiveness really impressed me.

Starting Out and Growing My Career

From the beginning, my role and responsibilities were clearly defined. Everyone was transparent about what was expected of me and what steps I could take to progress in my career. Since this was my first job, I was clueless about how corporate life worked, but the team was incredibly supportive. Regular check-ins and conversations with experienced colleagues helped me set smaller goals and stay on track.

Adjusting from Academia to the Workplace

There wasn’t a formal transition program, but what made the difference was how approachable everyone was. I asked a lot of questions, and people always responded quickly. Acturis doesn’t feel like a typical corporate environment with rigid processes. You can reach out to anyone—whether it’s your supervisor or a vertical lead—without worrying about hierarchy. It feels more like a collaborative startup where everyone is willing to help.

The Work Environment and Team Support

The work culture is very relaxed, there’s no micromanagement. As long as you deliver quality work, nobody dictates how you should do it. There are no strict rules or unnecessary pressure. Even when mistakes happen, the approach is constructive—focused on fixing the issue and learning from it rather than assigning blame. That openness makes the environment stress-free and refreshing.

Expectations vs. Reality

I didn’t have many expectations since this was my first job. My main concern was whether the work would match what I was hired for. I’d heard stories about companies hiring for one thing and then assigning completely different tasks. Thankfully, Acturis was very clear from the start, and I’ve been doing exactly what I was hired to do for the past two and a half years.

The Most Exciting Part of My Experience

The most exciting part has been working on new projects—and even proposing some myself. There have been times when I suggested projects I wanted to learn from, and the team accommodated those ideas. They added them to my targets so I could explore new areas while contributing to the company. That flexibility to learn and grow within my role has been amazing.

Final Thoughts

One thing that really stands out about Acturis is clarity and speed. During the hiring process, they were upfront about timelines and decisions. When they said I’d get a decision by next week, I actually did. That transparency made planning so much easier. Overall, Acturis has been a great place to start my career—supportive, clear, and full of opportunities to learn.
