My Journey at Acturis: From Developer to Leader
Andrew
Starting Out
I’ve been with Acturis for almost 13 years now. I started back in the summer of 2013, and it’s been quite a journey. When I first joined, my role was as an ETL Developer. My job was all about writing database scripts—pulling data from one place and putting it into another so it was easier to report on. I stayed in that role for about six or seven years, and it gave me a solid technical foundation.
Finding Acturis
Honestly, I came across Acturis through a list of job postings. I applied to most of them at the time, and one was through a recruitment agency that a lot of graduates use. That’s how I connected the dots to Acturis—I’d never heard of the company before then. It was a leap into something new, and I’m glad I took it.
Why I Took the Opportunity
It was a big opportunity for me. I was already in a fairly senior position in the UK, but this role offered the chance to grow even further, manage a team eventually—which has happened—and explore Canada. Moving here has been amazing, both personally and professionally.
Career Growth and Development
My role has evolved massively since those early days. I’ve gone from reporting to a couple of people and completing tasks to having a big-picture role in the company. Now, I help decide how we should approach things, manage people, support their development, and deliver training. I also play a part in shaping the company’s growth, which is something I never imagined when I started.
Lessons Learned
One of the biggest things I’ve learned is that I’m actually a people person. I didn’t think that was the case before, but working with so many new people across different teams has shown me that I can build strong relationships and collaborate effectively. It’s a skill I’ll carry forward in my career.
Why I’ve Stayed So Long
There are a lot of reasons I’ve stayed with Acturis for so long. I enjoy the day-to-day work because everything is always new—there’s always something different to tackle. I also really enjoy the people I work with. There are always fun activities going on, and everyone is great to talk to. The job itself is interesting, and I love learning new technical aspects. Plus, I get plenty of opportunities to help others, which is something I value.
What I Value Most
If I had to pick one thing I value most about Acturis, it would definitely be the people. If I turned up to work and wasn’t smiling, it would be a completely different story. But everyone here is a pleasure to be around, and that makes a huge difference.
Advice for Secondment Opportunities
If an opportunity arises to undertake a secondment , I’d say go for it! I’ve had an incredible experience. There’s so much to do, both at work and outside of work. I had reached a point in my career where I was unsure about exploring something new or moving into a different role, and the opportunity to be seconded to Canada became a great stepping stone in helping me fulfil my potential.
Tips for Growing Within the Company
My advice for anyone who wants to grow within Acturis is simple: put yourself out there. Help where you can. Look beyond your own role—what do other people do? How can you support them? How can you make everyone’s lives better and improve the company? When you do that, everyone benefits.
